I am an assistant research scientist at the University of Michigan, Department of Astronomy. I study astrophysical black holes and their relationship with their hosts, be they galaxy nuclei, dark matter halos, stellar clusters, or whatever.
News
2012 Feb 16 - Our recent paper, "A Chandra Survey of Supermassive Black Holes with Dynamical Mass Measurements," has been accepted by ApJ and posted to astro-ph.
2012 Jan 18 - I will be giving a seminar at Wayne State on Feb 15, 2012.
2012 Jan 9 - We are pleased to announce Black Holes by the Black Sea, a workshop on black holes in Istanbul to take place June 25–29, 2012.
2011 Oct 17 - I will be giving a colloquium at the Penn State Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at 4:00pm (EST) on 2012 Feb 1.
2011 Oct 17 - I never mentioned that we were awarded 101 ks of Chandra time.
2011 Sep 14 - I will be giving a colloquium at the NRAO/University of Virginia at 4:00pm (EST) on 2011 Oct 13.
2011 Aug 31 - I will be giving a colloquium at University of Maryland, College Park, Department of Astronomy at 4:00pm (EST) on 2011 Nov 9.
2011 Aug 31 - I will be giving a colloquium at University of Texas, Department of Astronomy at 4:30pm (CST) on 2011 Sep 20.
2011 Aug 31 - I will be giving a colloquium at Steward Observatory/NOAO at 4:00pm (MST) on 2011 Sep 8. My talk is oh-so-creatively titled "Black hole scaling relations."
2011 Aug 31 - Gultekin, Richstone, Gebhardt, et al. (2011) "Is there a black hole in NGC 4382?" accepted by ApJ and posted to astro-ph.
2011 Jun 13 - Miller & Gultekin (2011) "X-ray and Radio Constraints on the Mass of the Black Hole in Swift J164449.3+573451" submitted to ApJL and posted to astro-ph. We find that the fundamental-plane based mass of the accreting source is \(\log(M / M_{\scriptscriptstyle \odot}) = 5.9 \pm 1.1 \) . This is an interesting mass range because it rules out masses that are too large to be viable for tidal disruption while still allowing the smaller mass needed for tidal disruption of a white dwarf. UPDATE: accepted by ApJL.
2011 Jun 8 - Miller et al. (2011) "Discovery of a New Supernova Remnant in the Swift Galactic Plane Survey" ATEL circulated. Check out the cool images [PDFs].
2011 Jun 6 - We were awarded time on HST, Proposal ID GO-12577.
2011 Jun 6 - Gultekin, Tremaine, Loeb, & Richstone (2011) "Observational selection effects and the M–σ relation" was accepted by ApJ and posted to astro-ph.
