The Size, Shape and
Fate of the Universe
October 21, 2005
Mohler Prize Lecture

What is the shape of the universe? Is it infinite? Will it expand forever? Einstein's theory of general relativity links these questions to the measurement of distances to astronomical objects. In the past few years, these measurements have been made and this lecture will reveal the answers to some of the oldest questions ever asked.
David Spergel is a professor in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University. His research interests range from extrasolar planets to early universe cosmology. He has served on several committees for the National Academy of Sciences and has recieved numerous awards for his work. Most notably, a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002, and the Helen B. Warner Prize of the American Astronomical Society in 1994. Time Magazine has identified him as "One of America's Top Scientists".
